Characteristics of Salt
Sodium chloride, commonly known as salt, has the chemical compound
formula NaCl. Salts are characterized by ionic bonds, relatively high
melting points, electrical conductivity when melted or when in solution, and
a crystalline structure when in the solid state. Salt is a white solid,
soluble in hot or cold water, slightly soluble in alcohol, but insoluble in
concentrated hydrochloric acid. In the crystalline form the compound is
transparent and colorless, shining with an icelike luster.
Salt is widely available in nature. It is found in ocean water, as well as
many rivers, seas and lakes. It can also occur as a top layer in swamps and
dry lake bottoms. The simplest means of extracting salt is through
evaporation of salt water, however it can be expensive. Mainly salt is
obtained from mining rock salt from underground sources, through the
evaporation of rock-salt brine.
Uses of salt
Salt has been used throughout history to season and preserve foods, as
well as in ancient religious rites. It was an important medium of exchange
during the Middle Ages, especially across the Mediterranean. Salt is still
used today to season foods, as it is an essential part of the human diet.
However, it is also used as a source of chlorine and sodium. Chlorine
compounds of commercial importance include hydrochloric acid, chloroform,
carbon tetrachloride, and bleaching powder. Important sodium compounds
include sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, baking soda, and sodium hydroxide.
Salt is also used in some refrigeration processes, in dyeing, manufacture of
soap and glass, production of prisms and lenses. There are also different
types of salt, including table salt, iodized salt, kosher salt, sea salt and
rock salt. Sea salt is evaporated from ocean water and comes in forms such
as sel gris, Esprit du Sel, and Fleur de Sel, pink salt, brown salt, and
black sea salt.

Salt Mining - WA Surface Mining
http://www.wasurfacemining.com.au/
Since commencing surface mining operations in 2006, WA Surface Mining has been at the forefront of surface mining in Australia and continues to be one of the most innovative contributors to the development of mining in the region.
WASM has all the equipment, staff and resources to provide a stand-alone service to resource owners and mining contractors. WASM provides the complete surface mining package: technologically advanced machines, experienced operators, maintenance crews, and ongoing research and development. The availability of this stand-alone service ensures minimal downtime not only for WASM's own machines, but also for mining companies who are making the most of WASM's expertise and success.
The floor of the pond at Useless Loop consisted of an excessively thick layer of salt crystals that had been untouched by the existing harvesting machines for many years. The machines in use at the time simply could not deal effectively with the uneven floor or the hardness of the salt caused by the continually developing salt crystals. The W2000 road profiler was set up with laser-levelling equipment to create a perfectly level floor. The pond that was harvested was approximately 300m by 350m in size, leaving behind a perfectly level floor to enable better growth for the salt.

The Salt Manufacturers Association
http://www.saltsense.co.uk/
Key information on salt, its history, manufacture and uses from the Salt Manufacturers Association. The rock salt we use for gritting roads comes from mines of ancient underground salt deposits. In the UK, mines are situated in Cleveland, County Antrim and below the Cheshire town of Winsford.
There are many hundreds of salt beds or domes (as they are sometimes known) across the world. Mines vary in depth from 100 metres or so, to a mile or more. Within the mines, there are networks of pathways formed by the areas from which salt has already been extracted. These are used as roads for mining vehicles to move from one part of the mine to another, or for personnel to travel from the shafts to the working face. The UK’s salt mines have some 140 miles of tunnels – that’s almost as long as the M5 motorway!

Polish Culture Website - The Most Famous Salt Mine - Wieliczka
http://www.polishculture.co.uk/
Situated in the vicinity of Krakow, Wieliczka used to be known as the place of brine exploitation as early as in the 10th and 11th centuries. In the 12th century Magnum Sal, a big fair settlement functioned there. The mining exploitation of rock-salt deposits began in the middle of 13th century, but this treasure was fully appreciated only by Casimir the Great. In 1368 he issued the so-called Casimir Regulations, the first Polish collection of mining laws, owing to which salt mining became the basis of royal income for a few centuries.
The mine functions continuously, but since the end of the previous century salt has no longer been drawn by mining methods, but by means of brine evaporation from mine’s leakages. The mine has nine levels to the depth of 327 m, approximately 300 km of galleries and nearly 3 thousand chambers.

Olsson Industries
http://www.olssons.com.au/
Olsson's is 100% Australian owned and produces salt nationally. Olsson's manufacture a large range of salt products for animal nutrition and commercial use. Olsson Industries is the only family-owned and operated company producing salt in Australia. In addition to salt products Olsson’s also manufacture nutritional supplements for livestock, such as cattle, sheep, goats, horses, etc.
The Olsson family started this particular business in 1949 as a direct result of numerous requests from graziers for someone to produce supplements to meet the nutritional needs of their sheep and cattle during the severe drought that started in 1947 and continued until 1952. Olsson’s 1st salt block was produced in 1949 in a shed just west of Parramatta. It was the first pressed salt block produced in Australia to contain a range of minerals and was the forerunner of all the multi-nutrient blocks produced in Australia from that time onwards.

Solar Desalination
http://www.solardesalination.com.au/
Wherever flat land, sunshine and salty water exist in the same place solar salt harvesting is possible. It simply involves leaving salt water to evaporate and harvesting the salt. Cheetham Salt, the nation's largest salt producer, has been solar salt harvesting in Australia for more than 100 years. An Acquasol strategic partner, Cheetham controls much of the land upon which Acquasol's solar-powered desalination complex will sit. The land, located at Point Paterson just south of Port Augusta, was used for solar salt harvesting until the late 1940s. But sincethen, it's been fallow.
Acquasol's desalination plant offers an opportunity to reopen the salt fields. But rather than evaporating seawater, the salt fields will evaporate brine, the hypersaline waste liquid byproduct of desalination. Twice as salty as seawater, brine is ideal feedstock for salt harvesting because the job of separating salt from water is already half done. This should lead to lower production costs. It also means brine is kept out of the ocean where it can have unknown impacts on the sensitive marine environment.
