Tasmania's historic Beaconsfield Gold Mine is being brought back to life. More than 100 years after gold was first produced, the mine is returning to its former glory as one of Australia's premier gold mines. When mining operations ceased in 1914 the extent of the remaining mineral resource was unknown.
Since redevelopment began in the 1980's, extensive exploration has identified a resource of 1.5 million tonnes within a 450 vertical metre zone beneath the old workings, which extended more than 450 metres below the surface. A multi-stage development program, designed to bring the mine into full production and incorporating construction of an on-site processing mill, is now nearing completion. The initial stages of redevelopment have centered on the rehabilitation and dewatering of one of the original shafts, the Hart Shaft, to the 375m level. Installation of an 800 litre per second capacity pump station 180 metres below the surface has been critical.

The Company announced on 7 April 2006 that a short term mining, production and exploration plan would be implemented aimed at returning the Norseman gold operations to a sound operational and financial footing. A longer term production forecast will also be prepared in due course which will provide the basis for longer term financial planning.
A regional exploration program has been prepared to evaluate Croesus’s highly prospective and extensive landholding surrounding its Norseman operations. A second drill rig has been contracted to advance progress on HV1 East, HV5B West, and Redfin reefs as these are all close to existing infrastructure. Mining of the HV1 East reef has continued to exploit high grade mineralisation with grades in excess of 45 g/t gold. Significant high grade drilling results at Redfin reef, including 1.38m at 17.4g/t gold and 0.77m at 29.4g/t gold confirm that the reef remains open down dip and has the potential to add significantly to the Mineral Resource inventory for the Harlequin mine.
