Gold mines and information on gold mining
Kingsgate Consolidated Limited is an Australian gold mining and
exploration company operating a modern gold mine and developing mineral
resources in Thailand. Kingsgate Consolidated Limited (Kingsgate) is a
highly successful gold mining and exploration company, traded on the
Australian Stock Exchange (KCN: ASX). The company owns and operates the low
cost Chatree gold mine in central Thailand through its wholly-owned
subsidiary, Akara mining limited, using world's best practice for safe,
environmental and socially responsible operations.
Globally, world gold production exceeded 2478 metric tons, or 79.667
million troy ounces in 2004. There are many types of gold deposits including
epithermal vein deposits, intrusion-related breccia pipes, mesothermal
turbidite- and greenstone-hosted deposits, contact deposits (skarns),
replacement deposits, disseminated ores, placers, and Archean banded-iron
formation deposits.
As of 2006, the country producing the most gold was South Africa with 11.1%,
followed by the USA (10.5%), Australia (10.2%), China (9.7%), Peru (8.2%),
Indonesia (6.8%), Russia (6.2%), Canada (4.2%), Papau New Guinea (2.7%), and
Ghana 63.1mt (2.6%).
The world's deepest
gold mine
is currently the Savuka mine on the north-west rim of the Witwatersrand
Basin in South Africa. This operation mines to a depth of 3,777m. Savuka
yielded 5.68g/t in the fourth quarter of 2002. The Grasberg mine in
Indonesia is the world's largest gold producer, while Newmont's Yanacocha
mine in Peru is the second largest in the world, 14,000 feet above sea level
in the Andes. At the other end of the scale, there are a myriad of very
small miners operating as one-man bands, panning for alluvial
gold or working shallow outcrops in many parts of Africa, Latin America and
Asia, and finding perhaps only a few ounces in any one year.
Information about gold
At the end of 2001, it is estimated that all the gold ever mined amounts
to about 145,000 tons. If national gold reserves are taken into account,
most gold is owned by the USA followed by Germany and the IMF. If we include
jewellery ownership, then India is the largest repository of gold in terms
of total gold within the national boundaries.
Around 70% of gold demand is jewellery, 11% is industrial (dental,
electronics) and 13% is investment (such as bars & coins).
Gold's great virtues of malleability, ductility, reflectivity, resistance to
corrosion and unparalleled ability as a thermal and electrical conductor
mean it is used in a wide variety of industrial applications consuming close
to 300 tonnes annually.
The prime use is in electronics. Our age of high technology finds it
indispensable in everything from pocket calculators to computers, washing
machines to television and missiles to spacecraft. The plating of such
contacts in switches, relays and connectors is the major application of gold
in electronics. Dental gold is the second important sector. Other
applications for gold include decorative plating of costume jewellery,
watchcases, pens and pencils, spectacle frames and bathroom fittings.
Kingsgate's rapidly growing reserve/resource position is fuelled by
exploration within a surrounding gold province which exhibits world class
potential. Click here for more information on our products and services...

Alaska Gold: The Gold Rush and goldpanning
http://www.alaskascenes.com/
The 1890s brought swarms of gold seekers to Alaska - to Skagway and on to the Klondike - and to Nome. Today miners and goldpanners still find gold in Alaska's mountains and creeks.
The role of gold in Alaska's past and present is hard to overlook. There are evidences of it everywhere, in everything from events like Fairbanks Golden Days and Valdez Gold Rush Days, to hotels with names like Golden Nugget, Motherlode, Golden North, and Gold Miner's, to the gold exhibit in the University of Alaska Museum in Fairbanks and to gold nugget jewelry and painted goldpans in gift shops throughout the state.
Gold was first discovered in Southeast Alaska in the 1870s. The first discovery was made near Sitka in 1872 and the second was made in 1876 in Windham Bay. These finds followed the discovery of gold nearby in British Columbia in 1861.

At Economymodels you will find essays, software tools and other information. We have a special emphasis on capital markets, but no matter what part of the economy you are interested in, we believe that the site will help you to better cope with ever changing economic conditions.
There are two primary sources of gold supply – mining and central bank vaults. At current prices, most mines are not profitable and mining supply is wholly inadequate to fill the demand. The remaining gold has been provided by central banks, partly by outright sales and partly by lending. This so called gold leasing is probably the most controversial issues in the gold world. It is not known how much gold has been leased by central banks. The amount can be estimated as a differential between demand and other forms of supply, but it is a very difficult calculation. Numbers from 5000, to 20000 tons of gold have been estimated based on the same sources of information. What is clear, is that many years of future gold production have been borrowed and sold into the market.

Kennedy Gold Mine - Historic Gold Mine Surface Tours - Home Page
http://www.kennedygoldmine.com/
Take a surface tour of the Kennedy Gold Mine, one of California's most famous historic sites and one of the deepest gold mines in the world. The Kennedy Mine, famous for being one of the deepest gold mines in the world (at 5912 feet), demonstrates how gold changed an entire way of life in California. Although gold was known to be present and was mined by the Spanish and Mexicans, the California Gold Rush did not begin until after James Marshall's discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848.
Between 1848 and 1858, California exploded from being a largely unpopulated agrarian state into a vital, fast growing and exciting part of the United States. Prospected in 1860, reorganized in 1886 and continuously run until 1942, the Kennedy Gold Mine produced approximately $34,280,000 in gold according to the CA Dept. of Conservation. One of the tallest head frames in existence today can be seen at the Kennedy Mine. The mine also had one of the largest stamp mills in the Mother Lode, moving tailings by means of huge wooden wheels, some of which are still standing.

Mineral Information Institute - GOLD
http://www.mii.org/
Mineral Information Institute - GOLD. Used in dentistry and medicine, in jewelry and arts, in medallions and coins, in ingots as a store of value, for scientific and electronic instruments, as an electrolyte in the electro-plating industry. South Africa has about half of the world’s resources. Significant quantities are also present in the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, and Russia.
Gold is found in two major types of deposits. Lode deposits are deposits where gold is found in cracks and veins in rocks. These are also called vein deposits. The second type of gold deposit is called a placer deposit. Placer deposits are formed by moving water that has eroded gold out of lode deposits.

How Gold Is Produced- This chart illustrates the general steps in open-pit gold mining. The specifics of the process vary from mine to mine.
Gold Refining Process Chart- All gold arriving at a refinery is evaluated for gold content which must be agreed upon with the customer before it is released for refining. This can be a simple melt, sample and assay procedure for shipments in metal-bar form. Alternatively, it can be a complex mix of burning, drying, grinding, screening, blending and sampling for low-grade scrap and floor sweepings. Whatever the material, proper evaluation is key to arriving at a settlement that is fair to both customer and refiner.
