The Phoenix Gold Mine - Page Map - Home

The Phoenix Vein was originally discovered in 1871 by a man with the last name Miner. The original discovery site was located high in the cliffs above the Phoenix Counter of today. It was then sold to a Cornish Miner who was said to have made his fortune off of the Phoenix and abandoned the mine. This Cornish miner worked the claim from the Rockford Tunnel located off Stanley Road. When he reached about 1000 ft. in depth he intersected the Phoenix Vein. The Phoenix Vein was worked by the Cornish Miner until he was able to return home and retire in Cornwall, a very rich man.

In the 1930 a local real estate investor purchased the Phoenix Claim for the amount of back taxes - $20! The real estate investor never worked the claim and sold it to a Mr Gunderson, a farmer from Minnesota in 1934 for $5000. Mr. Gunderson opened and worked the Phoenix Mine (where today's tour entrance is located). There are 3 levels going to a depth of 500 ft. the mine has been opened down to where the Rockford tunnel intersects the Phoenix vein. The Phoenix Tour includes a look at the main level of this 1930's work.

Homestake Gold Mine Visitors Center's Website

Welcome to the Homestake Gold Mine Visitors Center's Website. The story of the famous Black Hills Gold Rush has been told and retold. These accounts include countless history books, numerous fictional novels and most recently HBO’s loosely historical series, Deadwood.

Homestake Visitors Center

The Homestake Gold Mine was one of the early enterprises associated with the Gold Rush of 1876 in the northern Black Hills of what was then Dakota Territory. The mining community of Deadwood was the center of the gold fever, with tents, sawmills, log houses and saloons springing up seemingly overnight. But the real action would happen three miles away "over the hill" where brothers Fred and Moses Manuel and their partner Hank Harney located their Homestake claim on April 9, 1876. Moses liked what he saw in an outcropping of a vein of ore, referred to as a lead and pronounced "leed." Soon more prospectors materialized, and no time was lost in selecting a site for a new town. On July 10th work began on laying out the town lots, and that work was completed the next day. Miners were offered the lots, 50 x 100 feet, but were required to build on the lots in 60 days or forfeit them. That spurred many on to build on the front half and then sell the back half. Progress came quickly. Telegraph service began December 1st and by early 1877 four hotels, a grocery store, saloon, bakery and butcher shop were up and running.
