Coal Industry |
The most economical method of coal extraction from coal seams depends on
the depth and quality of the seams, and also the geology and environmental
factors of the area being mined. If the coal seams are near the surface, the
coal is extracted by strip mining. Strip mining exposes the coal by the
advancement of an open pit or strip. As the coal is exposed and extracted,
the overburden from the still-covered coal fills the former pit, and the
strip progresses.
Mountaintop mining involves removing the highest part of the mountain for
the maximum recovery of coal. The process is highly controversial for the
drastic changes in topography, the practice of hollow fills, or filling in
valleys with mining debris, and for covering streams and disrupting
ecosystems.
Most coal seams are too deep underground for open cast mining and thus this
type of mining is called underground mining. In deep mining, the room and
pillar or board and pillar method progresses along the seam, while pillars
and timber are left standing to support the coal mine roof. Once room and
pillar mines have been developed to a stopping point (limited by geology,
ventilation, or economics), a supplementary version of room and pillar
mining referred to as second mining or retreat mining is commonly started.
This is when miners remove the coal in the pillars, thereby recovering as
much coal from the coal seam as possible. There are four main types of
underground mining: longwall mining, continuous mining, blast mining, and
shortwall mining.
Australian Coal industry
Mining of black coal is one of Australia's most important industries,
creating significant employment in regional Australia, fuel for low-cost
electricity generation and steel-making, and vital export income. Australia
is the world's biggest coal exporter, and black coal is Australia's largest
export, worth around $A24.5 billion in 2005-06.
In addition to providing Australian consumers with affordable electricity,
coal is a large reason for the international competitiveness of the entire
Australian economy.
Black coal mining in Australia is an increasingly sophisticated, hi-tech
activity. Continuous improvements in mining technology, occupational health
and safety and environmental performance have ensured that Australia is the
world's most efficient and reliable producer of high quality thermal and
coking coals for the international market.

Pike River Coal Limited
http://www.pike.co.nz/
Pike River Coal Limited (Pike River) continues to make good progress in the development of its underground premium hard coking coal mine, located 50 kilometres north east of Greymouth on the South Island’s West Coast. Pike River’s hard coking coal will be used by coke and steel makers and will be an important component in the coke making blend due to its low ash, low phosphorous and high fluidity.
With the 2,300 metre access tunnel nearing completion, first coal from the mine is expected around the end of August 2008. The subsequent months will see the completion of the ventilation shaft and a number of roadways being developed in the geologically complex zone adjacent to the Hawera fault, which forms the eastern boundary of the coal deposit. Production from the mine during this period will be a mixture of coal and stone as important infrastructure roadways are developed underground.
